A Word About This Fine Art Form

Passamaneria (Trimmings), recognized as a fine art form since the Renaissance or later for religious or military uniforms, ornamental drapes, and sophisticated home decoration. This unique medium can be described as generic denomination of weaved textile, of thread either in silver, gold, wool, or other material. In the late nineteenth century, Italian artist, inventor, and designer Mariano Fortuny (1871-1949) embraced this entrancing art form for his home decoration.  As a young man, flourishing in a family of artists, Fortuny was introduced to many different textiles and fabrics. His parents were passionate for materials and had their own collections of textiles from various shops they had visited in Europe. This rich cultural environment stimulated Fortuny to experiment and create his own textiles and dresses. Another important artist, also from Italy, that worked in this rare medium was Enrico Baj (1924 – 2003), a politically motivated artist and writer of his time. Continuing the tradition of these two Masters, Franco Marchi lives and thrives in Florence and stands, as Italian art critic Ugo Mongardi Fantaguzzi proclaims, "one of the major creators of the 21'st century."

Artist Fanco March is represented by the Stonebreaker Fine Art Gallery. This is the first display and sale of his popular works in the United States.
