Description
The lizard is significant in Navajo stories for their perseverance and for keeping ancient secrets. They are also used in story telling to be an annoyance to the Coyote. Lizards play positive roles in the folklore of the Navajo people. Lizards are associated with healing and survival, masculinity , and are considered sacred medicine animals. The Gila Monster is coveted as a powerful hero in Navajo legends. Lizards are associated with protection (especially of children), prosperity, renewal, and good luck. The lizard, specifically the Gila Monster, is the god or medium of divination by sensation in some rites, as in the wind chant. Navajos say that he is the original hand-trembler, which means that he can foretell the nature of mortal illness and protect against it.
