Cathance River Smelt Shanties, Bowdoinham, Maine

Giclee print from the original watercolor by artist, Alicia J. Stonebreaker

The watercolor painting “Cathance River Smelt Shanties” by Alicia J. Stonebreaker depicts a tranquil winter scene along the Cathance River in Bowdoinham, Maine, with a soft orange sun casting a warm glow over a snowy landscape. In the foreground, rustic shanties and a blue structure are nestled among tall, dark evergreen trees and bare, leafless branches, their silhouettes adding a stark contrast to the delicate pastel sky. The ground is blanketed in light snow, reflecting the muted colors of the dawn or dusk, while the distant horizon blends into a hazy mix of blues and grays. The artist’s use of loose, fluid brushstrokes enhances the serene, almost ethereal quality of this cold, riverside setting.
