Description

Hastiin Sik’ai’ii can be translated as Man with a Solid Stance in Navajo (pronounced Hasteen Sick eye ee). Corvus is a small constellation in the Southern Celestial Hemisphere. Its name comes from the Latin word "raven" or "crow". Corvus depicts stability, strong posture, and balance in the form of a warrior standing with his feet wide apart in a solid stance. He is seen in the summer and fall months in the early dawn and is an indicator of the parting of the seasons. He is a warrior in the full maturity of life and carries a staff, a bow and arrow to provide protection. Principles of thinking and planning are associated with this Navajo constellation.
From Navajo Country, in the Southern part of the sky, this constellation is composed of more than thirty stars and looks like a man standing. As the weather begins to turn colder during the latter part of September, he appears to shift his position and becomes an indicator that winter is about to begin. Traditionally, the emergence of this constellation is an indicator that winter related communal and social activities can begin.
