Description

Yikáísdáhá can be translated as That Which Awaits the Dawn and is the Milky Way(pronounced yih kais dah hah). Yikáísdáhá is related to the annual Milky Way natural cosmic process. The emergence of pre-dawn is determined by the position of the Milky Way that changes with the nights, months, and seasons.  The full cyclical emergence of the Milky Way can be observed and experienced in the early pre-dawn hours in mid January of every year.  During this time, the full circle of Milky Way is completely visible from Navajo Country.  The Milky Way is the last of the eight main constellations and signifies completeness and wholeness.

IEI acknowledges that the earth is an integral part of a much larger universe. Stories are often told in the Indigenous world of the connections between Mother Earth and Father Sky. We are made of the same chemistry as the stars. Studies of Indigenous astronomies illuminate these connections and show the participation of humans in the universe.
