Pencil Sketch

In May, 1969 Alicia traveled to Europe and spent one month exploring Italy and particularly Venice. She travelled by herself and stayed at the Londra Palace Hotel. This beautiful hotel sits on the famous St. Marco Canal with its many gondolas and sailboats passing by.  One of the hotel’s most famous guests was the Russian composer Tchaikovsky who stayed here in December 1877. In room 106 he composed the first three movements of Symphony No. 4, originally entitled ‘Do Leoni’. Directly in front of the Londra Palace Hotel is the Victor Emmanuel II Statue. Victor Emmanuel II (1820-1878) was the irst king (1861-1878) of united Italy and last king of Piedmont-Sardinia (1849-1861). While sitting on her second story hotel balcony, Alicia sketched this compelling Venice scene illustrating the people and views of Venice.
