Pencil Sketch

Artist Alicia J. Stonebreaker, Polish born and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts, Poznan and the Kassel Art Academy in Germany, would travel to Monhegan Island, Maine to paint each summer. This pencil sketch by Alicia was completed in 1973 in the great little Maine coastal town of Port Clyde. This Maine town is where the Monhegan Boat Line, established in 1914, transports visitors to Monhegan Island. The two boats are named the Laura B and Elizabeth Ann and have three trips daily in summer, once daily sailings spring and fall, and three sailings a week in winter. Observe how this wonderful pencil sketch captures the waving United Sates flag on the dock, her great use of perspective in sketching the salt box structure, the reflections of tidal water around the dock pilings, and the power lines and tress around the dock area. Alicia was probably waiting for the boat to Monhegan Island when she sketched this Port Clyde scene. If you ever have the pleasure of visiting Monhegan Island, you will remember this great sketch of a classic Maine coastal town.
